2006 turnover of German woodworking industry raised by commodity price increase -companies report tense profit situation
Bad Honnef. The turnover of the German woodworking industry has increased by 11,5 percent in 2006. In total, the industry sold products worth 17,9 billion Euro € (16,05 billion Euro in 2005). According to the chief exectuve of HDH, Dirk-Uwe Klaas, the sawmills turnover increased by 17,1 percent, followed by the manufacturers of wooden packaging (12,9 percent) and the manufacturers of building elements (12,7 percent). The manufacturers of timber boards grew by 6,1 percent.
Chief executive Klaas: „The above-average growth is a result from heavily increased prices for raw timber, which have been passed on into the market. To that extent, the turnover plus misleads about the companies' tense profit situation, and it may by no means give any cause for excessive wage agreements."
In 2006, the entire German woodworking industry provided jobs for 83.561 workers and employees in 1.366 mostly mid-sized companies.

Sales of german furniture industry increase by 5.4 % during the first nine months 2006
2006 has been a good year for furniture. After five lean years the German furniture manufactures have sold goods to the value of 13.2 Billion Euros in the first nine months of 2006. These are 700 Million Euros more than a year before and it corresponds to a sales surplus of 5.4 %. While the domestic turnover rose about 1.4 % the exports grew about 15.3 % to 4.17 Billion Euros. The export quota now is about 31.6 % in comparison to 28.9 % last year. This fact complies to the anticipated economic growth of 2.5 %, which can be related to the high export rate.
The main weakness of the inland is the almost exclusive price-controlled furniture marketing. Further, the raw-materials will get more expensive and the value-added tax will be raised by 2007. The sale of kitchen-, office- and store-furniture is fairly successful. With a turnover of about 2.8 Billion Euros, the kitchen-industry earned 9.4 % more than last year. With regard to office- and store-furniture the sale rose about 9.5 % (1.8 Billion Euros). Seating furniture could be sold to the value of 3.3 Billion Euros. This is 0.1 % more than in the year before. In the first nine months furniture for dining, living and bedrooms were sold for about 4.6 Billion Euros, which is an increase of 6.2 % applied to the previous year.
In the whole furniture industry the sales surplus of 4 % is expected for the entire year 2006. Nowadays, 1087 companies with altogether 101.795 employees produce furniture. Probably, the number of employees will remain constant within the next few years.
